Recap:
What happens when you love God, follow Him faithfully, and life still falls apart? When you’ve prayed, believed, and waited, but God doesn’t seem to answer?
In Job chapter 1, we see a man who loved God and did everything right, yet lost nearly everything in a single day. Job didn’t know why it was happening, and he had no explanation for his suffering. But his response teaches us something powerful about faith.
God never promised us a life without suffering or an easy explanation for everything we experience. Jesus reminds us in John 16:33 that we will have trouble in this world, but He also tells us to take heart because He has overcome the world.
When Job received the devastating news, he tore his robe in grief, fell to the ground, and worshiped God. His pain was real, but so was his faith. Faith makes room for both grief and worship. We don’t have to pretend everything is okay. We can bring our hurt, disappointment, and unanswered questions to God. Our grief doesn’t invalidate our worship, and our worship doesn’t eliminate our grief.
The story of missionaries Martin and Gracia Burnham reminds us that even those who dedicate their lives to serving God are not exempt from suffering. After 376 days in captivity and the tragic loss of her husband, Gracia still testified to God’s goodness. She didn’t have all the answers, but she learned that we can trust God’s character even when we don’t understand His actions.
And where do we see God’s character most clearly? At the cross. Jesus didn’t stand at a distance from our suffering. He stepped into it. The cross may not explain every tragedy, but it reveals just how deeply God loves us.
And the resurrection reminds us that our suffering is not the end of the story. Because Jesus conquered death, we have the promise that one day He will make all things new. Revelation 21:4–5 reminds us that there is coming a day when there will be no more death, sorrow, crying, or pain.
Whatever you’re walking through today, you don’t have to understand everything to keep trusting God. You can grieve and still worship. You can have questions and still have faith. And when you can’t see God’s hand, you can trust His heart.
Resurrection is coming. Dead things come alive. And because of Jesus, suffering will never have the final word.
